SONGBIRD WAS CREATED BY JOSANA BLUE, A PAINTER LIVING IN BUSHWICK, NY.
Songbird has a whimsical, musical theme with lines of abstract sheet music and features a peacock symbolizing beauty and integrity. The print symbolizes that "the music and rhythm gives us infinite love"
Q & A WITH JOSANA
What was your inspiration for Songbird?
Songbird was inspired by the Sakroots brand and its happy free spirited visual language. I thought about the rhythm of the ocean and music as the air…the infinite linear and spatial connection between the heart and music.
Was being an artist your dream? Were you artistic as a child?
I don't know if it was ever a dream but rather an undeniable reality of my being. I think when I was maybe 5 I colored a picture of myself with yellow pigtails holding a paint pallet with a rainbow of colors and a paintbrush. Next to my portrait I wrote "I am going to be an artist when I grow up". That was that. I have been creative since the beginning for sure. I have always found great joy in taking what I have to make what I need and what makes me happy. Having a creative challenge is what I live for.
How and when did you begin as a professional artist?
I suppose I am still growing into my "professional artist" status. It is a continual arduous journey. I think my first big step was right out of undergrad. I landed my first big gallery show and at the same time received a very large commission for a 15 piece painting series for a private collector. I thought hot damn, this is sweet here I go! Then I moved to NYC. I have been banging on doors and hustling ever since.
Do you have any causes that you are active in helping support?
Over the years I have been very active in helping support many causes all of which have been connected to supporting and inspiring creativity in under privileged youths. I have worked with programs such as Upward Bound, Voices Unbroken and The Lower East Side Girls Club to name a few. With these programs I worked as a facilitator running creative workshops in painting, dance, creative writing, sewing and design. It is super important for me to be able to use my gifts in a way to help encourage and inspire creativity in whatever community I am connected with. I am absolutely thrilled that my print is going to help support the Harmony Project!
What is the most interesting thing about you that most people do not know about you?
Hmm, that is tough…I have a lot of great stories. I don't think that most people know that I was flying planes at 15 years old. That is pretty interesting.
